Having completed the check of the climbing equipment last week the team moved on to the rest of the project’s equipment. An essential part of preparing for the Antarctic field season is to make sure all the scientific instruments are in order, that sufficient logging equipment is at hand and that the clothes and camping equipment are all in good condition. The first step in doing this is to go through the project’s storage cupboards located in the Geography Department of Rhodes University.
On Monday the team attacked this task with gusto. The cupboards were given a once-over and all the equipment looked at with a critical eye (or eyes). The pictures above give a ‘before’ shot of the cupboards, as well as the team in action trying to organise their contents. The next step in the preparations? Setting up the camping equipment in order to practice pitching tents and setting up camp in (potentially) difficult situations, such as high winds and poor visibility.
