One Week at Sea

Last week the team left on their journey south to Antarctica and it feels as if the journey has now truly begun. Currently located at almost 58S the temperature has dropped below freezing and the ship has been officially been declared a no-short-pants zone. Currently it seems as if the ship is in ‘iceberg alley’, with many sightings having been made. The ship is also as close to Bouvet Island as it will get this trip and as a result the bird life has been awesome! (Have a look at the beautiful photos of birds below.) A few whales have also been sighted and one lone elephant seal. The atmosphere changes when the seas are calm (as they now are) and it becomes eerily quiet and surreal. Everybody is doing well and the various scientific teams have prepared talks to present to the other voyage participants aboard. The team’s presentations are on Thursday.
